Acne vulgaris (cystic acne or simply acne) is a common human skin disease, characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), nodules (large papules) and possibly scarring. Acne mostly affects skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles. These areas include the face, the upper part of the chest and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in non-inflammatory forms. The lesions are caused by changes in pilosebaceous units, which are skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland. These changes require androgen stimulation.
Acne occurs most commonly during adolescence, but often continues into adulthood. In adolescence, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone, which accrues during puberty, regardless of sex. For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear – or at the very least decreases – by age 25. There is, however, no way to predict how long it will take to disappear entirely, and some individuals will carry this condition well into their thirties, forties and beyond. Some of the large nodules were previously called “cysts” and the term nodulocystic has been used to describe severe cases of inflammatory acne. The cysts, or boils, that accompany cystic acne can appear in the buttock, groin and armpit areas, and anywhere else where sweat collects in hair follicles and perspiration ducts. Cystic acne affects deeper skin tissue than does common acne.
Acne treatments are customized to each patient based on the type of skin they have and the nature of the acne. Treatments can involve peels, home cleansing regimens and ultimately laser treatments. In most cases a minimum of five treatments is required in addition to the home care regimen.
Since the acne treatments that Skyview provides are all pharmaceutical-grade products with patented ingredients, the effectiveness of these treatments is many times greater than any store-bought product. The result is noticeably better and can eliminate or reduce acne for long periods or indefinitely.
Most acne treatments begin with a peel to exfoliate and improve skin hydration. Skyview uses Medique skin care peels because they are incredibly effective and there is no down time after a treatment. Home care cleansing products are then provided for the patient to use daily. Laser treatments may be used to smooth and reduce any acne scars that remain.
Skyview Medi-Spa has products and technology that cannot be found in regular spas. In fact, many of our acne patients are referred to us by their dermatologists because they know the effectiveness of our treatments. Our patients enjoy greater scheduling flexibility and excellent service and care in a relaxing and comfortable environment.
Skyview Medi-Spa offers a number of services and products to treat acne. These programs are customized to the patient and require a complimentary consultation to determine the most effective route for each patient. We treat all grades of facial acne, adult acne and acne on the back.
